Nico

Friday saw over a week that we’d been stuck together in close quarters and I was unravelling.

I could feel it.

I kept letting things slip.

And that didn’t even take into account me letting my tongue slip the day before. Not just about the frakking toasters, but right into her mouth. All right. Not quite, but close enough.

That kiss, though.

There was no regretting a kiss like that.

It was one of a kind. It was special. I couldn’t put my finger on why – on what it was about it – but I was pretty sure I’d remember that kiss on my deathbed.

I was walking up the hallway on my usual patrol when I heard a scream from her room. Reacting on pure instinct, I shouldered my way through the closed door – hearing another yelp – and met zero resistance.

My eyes scanned the room for danger. They came up with nothing. As in not even any obvious sign of Raegan.

“Good Baby Jesus,” I heard her whistle and she finally half emerged from behind her bed. “You sure know how to make an entrance. Talk about knocking a girl off her feet. Quite literally.”

I leapt over her bed unthinkingly and crouched down in front of her. While I assessed if she was hurt, I didn’t pay much attention to what she was wearing. Or, rather what she wasn’t.

“You’re okay?” I asked, not seeing any outward sign of injury.

She nodded. “Fine. I stubbed my toe then fell off the bed when you came barging in like some diabolical white knight.”

I looked into her eyes. “I thought this princess rescued herself?”

She shrugged and looked away from me as she said, “Maybe it’s good for the knight’s ego if the princess lets him save her once or twice.”

I felt my cocky smirk play at my lips, totally unbidden. “Oh, you let me save you?”

“That’s right.”

“From the floor?”

“The floor is lava.”

“Which is incredibly dangerous.”

“You know it. What are you going to do about it?”

This was dangerous ground we were treading, but I couldn’t stop myself. I wasn’t the knight in shining armour type. I wasn’t even the knight in leather type. I wished I was the space cowboy type, but even that was a pass. Didn’t stop me, though.

“Rescue the princess,” I said to her.

I gently picked her up off the floor and that was when I actually paid attention to what she was wearing. She was back in that mighty thin bathrobe. It barely covered her body. It clung to every arch and curve, every dip of her skin. It rode up her legs and hung off her shoulder, leaving swathes of skin on display. And she looked into my eyes like she knew exactly what the whole package was doing to me, which only served to heighten the response I had to her. I liked an assertive woman.

Our eyes were glued to each other’s as I slowly lowered her feet to the floor.

Tension zinged between us and I desperately wanted to act on it.

Again, in the moment, I forgot all about the consequences.
